Why Do Powerful Men Cheat?

First it was Eliot Spitzer, now John Edwards caught in extramarital affair. Edwards had for months denied rumors of an affair. In admitting an affair he blamed himself saying that he had become egocentric. This probably spells the end of Edwards political career. Many wonder why do these powerful men cheat? Why do they lie? Why do their wives stand with them?
