Promises, vows, curses, contracts – and plain old obligation!

Culturally we are not trained to think of such things as vows, or curses.  We are more conscious of promises and contracts, especially death bed ones or ceremonial ones like in a marriage ceremony, or even NDA or non-compete agreements that are literally legal contracts! What are these? Are they unfair manipulations and too one-sided? How do you stop them??
